One very common type of chair caning that was invented and first used back in the 1870’s is machine woven cane webbing. It also goes by a few other names; cane webbing, sheet cane, spline cane and cane panels. This is where the cane strips are woven on a loom into panels or sheets. The chair has a grove that is routed around the perimeter of the seat and these sheet panels are soaked in water to be more pliable, then they are tamped down into that routed grove and you use reed spline to put on top of the groove to hold down the sheet panels and to fill in the groove and finish the seat. Cane webbing is a lot easier and less time consuming than its counterpart, hole-to-hole hand caning. Really, the hardest part of this chair caning process, is getting rid of the old glue and old cane and cleaning out the groove. Once it is cleaned out, the average chair usually takes about a hour to do a complete caning job. Chair caning is a lot of fun. At first it might look intimidating but when you get into it, you will really enjoy it. Weather it is cane weaving, shaker tape weaving, rush or wicker we can help.
